Properties of Matter

Unit 2 8th Science 2025

TermDefinition
Matter anything that has mass and takes up space
Atoms the smallest part of a chemical element
Molecules two or more atoms held together by a chemical bond
pure substance made of only 1 type of atom or molecule
element a pure substance represented by a chemical symbol
element symbol one or two letter abbreviation for an element. It can have only one capitol letter
compound a combination of 2 or more bonded elements
mixture a combination of 2 or more substances
properties measurable characteristics that can be observed
heterogenous mixture consists of visible individual particles that are physically separate
homogenous mixture two or more substances that are evenly distributed and have no visible individual substances
physical change change in shape, size, state of matter and can possibly be reversed
chemical change when a reaction forms a new substance with different properties
chemical formula uses numbers and elements to give information about a chemical compound
chemical equation representation of a chemical reaction using symbols for substances
chemical reaction a change in matter that produces a new substance
photosynthesis the process of using light energy to make glucose
subscript a small number written after an element in a chemical formula which tells how many atoms of that element are present in a compound
coefficient the number in front of a symbol that represents the number of molecules present
law of conservation of mass matter cannot be created nor destroyed
6 evidences of a chemical change color change, bubbles/gas, light, precipitate, odor, heat change
precipitate when a solid is created from combining two liquids
parts of a chemical equation Reactants, a yield sign, and products
chemical potential energy energy stored within a substance that can release during a chemical rection
Bond the force that holds atoms together to form a molecule. Attraction between water molecules.
Alkaline any substance that has a pH higher than 7. Also called a basic.
Acid has a pH lower than 7
Base has a pH higher than 7.
Neutral a solution with a pH of 7. an example is water and salt mixed with water.
pH measures how acidic or basic liquids are based on free hydrogen and hydroxyl
Adhesion when a substance is attracted to another substance or molecule
Cohesion when like substances or molecules are attracted to each other.
Surface Tension force acting on the surface of a liquid caused by particle attraction
Closed System doesn't allow matter in or out of the system. energy can still flow.
Indicator substance which changes color when a solution touches it. It tells the pH of a solution.
Metalloids nonmetallic element that has some metal characteristics
nonmetal does NOT conduct electricity or heat well, is not hard or malleable
Corrosion slow destruction of metal by a chemical reaction
metal can conduct electricity/heat, is shiny, strong, hard, and malleable

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
