The Cell
Words that have to do with the cell and study of the cell
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Eukaryotic Cell | A cell that has most of its DNA enclosed in a nucleus, and also has other membrane-bound organelles. |
| Prokaryotic Cell | A smaller cell that lacks a nucleus and other membrane-bound organelles. |
| Cell Membrane | Phospholipid bi-layer that surrounds the contents of a cell |
| Nucleus | Membrane-bound organelle that contains the genetic information (DNA) for that organism. |
| Cell Theory | 1)All organisms are made of cells. 2)All existing cells are produced by other living cells. 3)The cell is the most basic unit of life. |
| Organelle | Small machine-like parts of the cell. Most have their own membrane, and their own function. |
| Diffusion | Movement from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration. |
| Concentration Gradient | A difference in concentration from one area to another. |
| Osmosis | The diffusion of water across a membrane. |
| Ribosome | A small organelle that takes information (Nucleic Acid) and turns it into protein. |
| Mitochondria | The powerhouse of the cell that creates the energy in the form of ATP. |
| ATP (Adenosine Tri-Phosphate) | What organisms use as energy at the cellular level. |
| DNA (Deoxyribo Nucleic Acid) | The information inside a nucleus that is instructions for how to build an organism. |
