Organ systems

TermDefinition
Circulatory The system that circulates blood and lymph through the body. Transports oxygen, hormones, and nutrients to the body.
Digestive The system that breaks down food into nutrients for the body. Digests food and absorbs nutrients, minerals, vitamins, and water.
Excretory The system responsible for removing waste products from the body
Nervous The system that transmits signals between different parts of the body. Collects, transfers, and processes information.
Muscular Involved in movement and heat production
Respiratory The system involved in breathing and the exchange of gases. Brings air to sites where gas exchange can occur between blood and cells or blood and air.
Skeletal The system that provides structure and support to the body. Supports and protects soft tissues of the body, produces blood cells, stores minerals.
Digestive examples Stomach & Intestines, esophagus
Respiratory examples Lungs, trachea, larynx, pharynx
Skeletal examples Bones & Cartilage, ligaments
Excretory examples Kidneys and bladder
Nervous examples Brain, spinal cord & nerves
