What do fluids do in the body? Carry nutrients, maintain structure, participate in chemical reactions, serve as a solvent, act as a lubricant, etc.
What percent of the adult body is composed of water? 60%
What percent do fruits and vegetables contain of water? 90%
How much cubic centimeters of water does the body excrete? 500 cc
What part of the brain initiates drinking behavior? Hypothalamus
What causes water retention? ADH
What causes sodium retention? Renin and aldosterone.
What maintains blood volume? Water
What are cations? Positive Ions
What are anions? Negative Ions
What does sodium do in the body? Helps maintain acid, needed for nerve transmissions and muscle contractions and is the principal cation of extracellular fluid.
What percent of sodium does salt have? 40%
What is the minimum requirement of sodium for adults? 500mg
What causes hyponatremia? Losing sodium and drinking too much water instead.
What is the most abundant mineral in the body? Calcium
What percent of calcium is in the bones (including teeth)? 99%
How can you check your blood calcium levels? Bone density test
What percent of calcium is absorbed from ingestion? 30%
What are some non-milk sources of calcium? Tofu, Kale, Figs, Broccoli, Salmond, etc
