| accumulation | the collection of water in lakes and oceans, or as clouds |
| condensation | when water vapor (gas) cools and changes back into water (liquid) |
| evaporation | when water (liquid) is heated and changes into water vapor (gas) |
| groundwater | water from precipitation that soaks into the ground and is stored in the pores of soil and rock |
| precipitation | the release of water from clouds as rain, snow, sleet, or hail |
| runoff | water that does not get absorbed into the ground and moves across the land into streams and rivers |
| solar energy | light and heat energy from the Sun |
| transpiration | evaporation of water from plants |
| water cycle | the continuous movement of water on, above, and through the Earth |
| water vapor | water in a gas state |
| aquifer | a body of permeable rock which can contain or transmit groundwater |
| atmosphere | a layer of gases that surrounds a planet |
| decades | a period of 10 years |
| decrease | a reduction or decline |
| gas | has no fixed shape or volume |
| heat | energy that is transferred from one body to another as the result of a difference in temperature |
| increase | to become larger, greater, or more numerous |
| interact | the action that occurs between two or more entities |
| liquid | a state of matter that has a definite volume but no fixed shape |
| patterns | a regular and predictable arrangement of forms, sequences, or events that can be found in nature |
| rain gauge | a scientific instrument that measures the amount of rain that falls in a specific area over a set period of time |
| solid | a state of matter where particles are tightly packed together, resulting in a fixed shape and volume |
| sun | a yellow dwarf star at the center of our solar system |
| temperature | the measure of hotness or coldness |
| thermal energy | the energy contained within a system that is responsible for its temperature |
| wind vane | a scientific instrument that measures the direction of the wind |
| climate | the average weather conditions of a particular location over a long period of time, typically measured in decades |
| weather | the state of the atmosphere at a specific time and place |
