| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Volcano | A volcano is a weak spot in the crust where molten material, or magma, comes to the surface |
| Magma | Magma is a molten mixture of rock-forming substances, gasses, and water from the mantle |
| Lava | Lava is made when magma reaches the surface, and cools to solid rock after |
| Ring of fire | Our major volcanic belt is the ring of fire, which is made by the many volcanoes that rim the Pacific Ocean |
| Island arc | Volcanoes that had made islands on the water from lava cooling on the water to make solid rock |
| Hot spot | An area where magma deep within the mantle melts though the crust like a blow torch |
| Magma chamber | Beneath a volcano, magma collects in a pocket called a magma chamber |
| Pipe | A long tube in the ground that connects the magma chamber to earth's surface |
| Vent | Molten rock and gas leave the volcano through a vent, there is often on central vent in the middle |
| Crater | Is a bowl-shaped area that may form at the top of a volcano around the volcano's central vent |
| Silica | A material that is formed from the elements oxygen and silicon, is one of the most abundant material in earth's crust and mantle |
| Pahoehoe | Is fast moving hot lava |
| Aa | Cooler and slower-moving lava |
| Pyroclastic flow | Occurs when an explosive eruption hurls out ash, cinders, and bombs as well as gasses |
| Active volcano | Is a volcano that is erupting or is showing signs that it might erupt in the near future |
| Dormant volcano | It is a volcano that is not active now, but can become active at any time later |
| Extinct volcano | A volcano that is unlikely to ever erupt again |
| Hot spring | A hot spring forms when groundwater is heated by a nearby body of magma rises to the surface and collects into a natural pool |
| Geyser | A geyser is a fountain of water and steam that erupts from the ground |
| Geothermal energy | In volcanic areas, water heated by magma can provide a clean, reliable energy source, which is geothermal energy |
| Shield volcano | A wide, gently sloping mountain which is a shield volcano |
| Cinder cone volcano | A steep, cone shaped hill or mountain volcano |
| Composite volcano | Are tall, cone shaped mountains with layers of ash and lava all over it |
| Caldera | The huge hole left by the collapse of a volcanic mountain. |
