Ch. 9 Key Terms

Key Terms

TermDefinition
Hematoma A reddened, swollen area where blood collects under the skin.
Hemoconcentration An increase in the ratio of formed elements to plasma caused by leaving the tourniquet on too long or too tight. It can alter some test results.
Hemolysis Can occur if the tourniquet is too tight or left on too long. Destruction of red blood cells can alter test results.
Palpation Feeling
Petechiae Small red spots on the skin, caused by a tourniquet that is too tight.
Requisition Form specifying which tests must be run or which samples to collect.
