vocabulary for Science Unit 8

QuestionAnswer
Orbit a regular, repeating path that one object in space takes around another object in space
Revolution the movement of an object around another object
Rotation the motion of spinning around an axis or center
Axis an imaginary line in the center of an object around which it rotates; Earth's axis goes from North to South, South to North and Earth rotates around it
Tilt tipping or leaning or sloping in a particular direction; Earth is not straight up and down. Instead, it tilts at about a 24 degree angle.
Indirect Sunlight sunlight that passes through something else before it reaches you; sunlight that hits the Earth at an angle and not directly, like it does at the equator
Direct Sunlight sunlight that does NOT pass through something else before it reaches you; the sunlight hits the Earth straight on and NOT at an angle (the equator gets direct sunlight)
Shadow a dark area behind an object that is blocking light
Moon the only object that orbits the Earth and it takes about 1 month to do it; it is 1/4 the size of Earth (think of the moon as a softball and the Earth as a basketball when comparing their sizes)
Moon Phases the part of the moon that we can see being hit by direct sunlight
