vocabulary for Science Unit 8

| Orbit | a regular, repeating path that one object in space takes around another object in space |
| Revolution | the movement of an object around another object |
| Rotation | the motion of spinning around an axis or center |
| Axis | an imaginary line in the center of an object around which it rotates; Earth's axis goes from North to South, South to North and Earth rotates around it |
| Tilt | tipping or leaning or sloping in a particular direction; Earth is not straight up and down. Instead, it tilts at about a 24 degree angle. |
| Indirect Sunlight | sunlight that passes through something else before it reaches you; sunlight that hits the Earth at an angle and not directly, like it does at the equator |
| Direct Sunlight | sunlight that does NOT pass through something else before it reaches you; the sunlight hits the Earth straight on and NOT at an angle (the equator gets direct sunlight) |
| Shadow | a dark area behind an object that is blocking light |
| Moon | the only object that orbits the Earth and it takes about 1 month to do it; it is 1/4 the size of Earth (think of the moon as a softball and the Earth as a basketball when comparing their sizes) |
| Moon Phases | the part of the moon that we can see being hit by direct sunlight |
