Geology Vocabulary

| fault | a fracture or zone of fractures between two rocks |
| fold | a geologic structure that is formed by layers or beds of rock being bent or folded |
| tectonic plates | gigantic pieces of the Earth's crust and uppermost mantle |
| geologic time scale | system of chronological measurements that relates to stratigraphy to time |
| geology | the study of Earth, its history and the processes that act on i |
| fossil | the geologically altered remains of a once-living organism |
| erosion | the process by which gravity, water, wind and ice remove and transport sediment from one place to another |
| deposition | the process by which gravity, water, wind and ice deposit weathered and relocated sediment |
| continental drift | the theory that continents were once connected but have drifted apart |
| relative dating | Using the locations of the layers relative to one another to date rocks, strata and fossils |
| rock strata | beds or layers of sedimentary rock having approximately the same composition throughout |
| sediment | Earth material that is broken down by processes of weathering and can be eroded |
| stratigraphy | the study of rock layers |
| superposition | As layers accumulate over time, the rock at the bottom is older than the rock toward to the top |
| weathering | exposing rock to air, water and ice to break it down chemically and mechanically |
