Unit 3 Atmosphere

Earth Science freshman Unit 3 Atmosphere

TermDefinition
air pollution the contamination of the atmosphere by the introduction of pollutants from human and natural sources
atmosphere A thin layer of gases surrounding Earth
Exosphere The outermost layer of the Earth's atmosphere that separates the atmosphere from outer space. Satellites orbit the Earth in this layer or in the thermosphere.
Function of the Atmosphere To protect life on earth by shielding it from incoming ultraviolet (UV) radiation, keeping the planet warm through insulation, and preventing extremes between day and night temperatures. The sun heats layers of the atmosphere causing it to convect driving air movement and weather patterns around the world.
How much Nitrogen is in the Earth's atmosphere? 78 percent
How much Oxygen is in the Earth's atmosphere? 21 percent
How much Argon is in the Earth's atmosphere? 0.93 percent
How much Carbon dioxide is in the Earth atmosphere? 0.038 percent
global warming An increase in the average temperature of the earth's atmosphere (especially a sustained increase that causes climatic changes)
Greenhouse gasses are...? carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, water vapor
How does a hot air balloon work? Hot air rises. Heated air molecules "spread out" or expand and bounce around, and the space becomes less dense than the surrounding space. Increasing the air temperature inside the balloon envelope makes it less dense than the air, thus making it "lighter than air". The amount of lift depends on the difference between the temperature inside and outside of the envelope, and the weight that is being lifted.
Layers of the atmosphere in order troposphere, stratosphere, mesosphere, thermosphere, exosphere
Mesosphere 3rd layer of the atmosphere located above the stratosphere and below the thermosphere. Meteors are burning up in the mesosphere.
ozone layer a layer in the stratosphere (at approximately 20 miles) that blocks most ultraviolet radiation from the sun
Stratosphere 2nd layer of atmosphere; location of ozone layer; absorbs 95% of Ultraviolet radiation; temperature increases with altitude increase.
Thermosphere The region of the atmosphere that lies between the exosphere and the mesosphere. Home to the International Space Station (a satellite) as it orbits Earth. The aurora (the Southern and Northern Lights) primarily occur in this layer
Troposphere lowest layer of the atmosphere: 0-17 km above Earth's surface, site of weather, organisms, contains most atmospheric water vapor.
Which gases are in the Earth's atmosphere? (in descending order) Nitrogen, Oxygen, Argon, Carbon dioxide

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
