Lesson 3 voc & dict

Greek and Latin Roots voc and dict for 6th Graders

Latin root "voc" means - it has 3 meanings! to call, words, or voice
Latin root "dict" means to say or to speak
A dictator is a leader who says what everyone must do
A verdict is when a jury "speaks" and "says" either guilty or innocent
A vocalist is a person whos says (sings) the words to a song
The word addictive means Something that a person has "said" or will "say" yes to because he or she can't say no
An avocation is is a person's hobby or what he or she likes to do when not working
A vocation is is a person's job or what they feel inclined to do as a job
To predict is to "say" what will happen before it happens. The prefix "pre" means before.
A prefix is called this because it is the meaningful part that comes before a root
Adding the suffix "ist" to a word means the person who does that thing such as a scientist is a person who does science.
affixes are both prefixes and suffixes
contradict to say or to speak against or say the opposite
dictation is the act of saying words for someone else to write down.
preview means to view before hand.
to prevent is to stop before it occurs or happens
the prefix contra means against
addictive means easy to speak or say yes to
a vocalist is a person who says/sings words
the base word of the word prefix is fix
a prefix goes at the ............ of a word beginning
a suffix goes at the .............. of a word end
