TermDefinition
Table of Contents It helps the reader identify key topics in the book in the order they are presented. It is located at the beginning of the book.
Headings They tell the reader what a section of text is about.
Subheadings They tell the reader what a section of text is about under a heading.
Illustrations They help the reader visualize and understand the text (drawings,paintings, digital graphic).
Captions They help the reader better understand a picture or photograph.
Photographs They show the reader what something looks like in real life.
Timeline They help the reader see important events in order.
Charts/Graphs They show information/data in a visual way so that it is more easily understood by the reader.
Diagrams/Labels Diagrams: Shows the parts of something in the form of a drawing Labels: They explain what certain parts of a diagram are called.
Maps They show the location of things or places in picture form.
Bold words They make words stand out as new and/or important. The words are usually defined in the glossary.
Glossary It tells what new or important words MEAN and is listed in alphabetical order.
Hyperlinks They tell the reader where on the internet they can find additional information.
Index It tells the reader on which page they should look to find information about a certain topic. It is listed in alphabetical order.
