| Term | Definition |

| Table of Contents | Helps the reader find the key topics in order of the book. It is found in the beginning of the book |
| Headings | They tell the reader what a section of a text is about |
| Subheadings | Tells the reader what the section is about under a heading |
| Illustrations | Helps the reader visualize and understand the text (drawing, painting, ect...) |
| Captions | Helps the reader understand a picture or photograph |
| Photographs | Shows the reader what something looks like in REAL LIFE |
| Timeline | Helps the reader see the important events in order |
| Charts/Graphs | Shows information and data in a visual way so the reader can understand more clearly. |
| Diagram & Labels | Diagram: Shows the parts of something in form of drawing Labels: Explains what the certain parts of a diagram are called |
| Maps | Shows location of things or places in picture form |
| Bold Words | Make words stand out. (Usually found in the glossary) |
| Glossary | Tells what words MEAN (Listed in alphabetical order) |
| Hyperlinks | Tells were you can find additional information on the internet |
| Index | Tells the reader which page they should look to find a specific topic |
