Breathing

SCI JC 2ND YR

QuestionAnswer
What is Respiration The release of energy from food
2 types of respiration Anaerobic respiration (No Oxygen), Aerobic respiration (Needs oxygen)
Advantages of nose breathing Moistens and warms up air, filters with hairs
What is the Trachea Carries oxygen to lungs, supported by cartilage rings
What is the Bronchus Divides trachea into 2 lungs
What are the Bronchioles Branch of form Bronchus carry oxygen to alveoli
What are the Alveoli Air sacks in the lungs, millions of them. Where gas exchange (diffusion takes place). Surrounded by capillaries
What comes in and out of blood Oxygen in, CO2 out
What happens after inhalation Oxygen is used in respiration in cells and the by-products are water vapour and CO2. These are exhaled
What is the Diaphram A sheet of muscle the moves oxygen and CO2 in and out of lungs
What is the Epiglotes It covers the trachea when eating
Function of intercostal muscle and ribs The move up and out during inhalation to pull air in. They move in and down to push air out when exhaling.
Explain whole process Nose -> Trachea and epiglottis -> Bronchus -> Bronchioles -> Alveoli -> Capillaries -> Cells -> By product out
Effect of exercise on breathing More energy is needed and more CO2 is made, increasing breathing
How to test for CO2 Limewater will turn milky white in contact with CO2
What is Energy The ability to do work
Formula for aerobic respiration Glucose + Oxygen -> CO2, Water Vapour, Energy
What is Anaerobic respiration Anaerobic respiration is the release of energy from food without oxygen
Why is respiration a bi-chemical process It is biological because it involves living things and chemical as their is a chemical reaction
What effects Respiration Glucose levels, Oxygen levels and the temperature
What causes cramps Build up of lactic acid in muscles due to lack of O2

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
