Earth Science freshman Scientific Method (with definitions)
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Conclusion | This section answers your original testable question. State whether your hypothesis was supported or not supported. |
| Constants | The factors that are kept the same in an experiment. |
| Control Group | Something that is used for comparison during the experiment. It does not get tested with the variable. |
| data | It is all the measurements taken from doing the experiment. |
| Dependent Variable | The variable to the experiment that responds to the change. |
| Experiment | Conducting a test! List your materials, the procedure, your independent variable (only ONE!), and observations. |
| experimental group | subjects in an experiment who are subjected to the independent variable or receive the variable being tested |
| Hypothesis | A logical prediction about your "testable" question. (an educated guess); Usually an if...., then..... statement. |
| Independent Variable | The variable that the experimenter decides to change to see if there is or is not an effect. |
| materials | a list of all of the equipment and supplies used to do the experiment. |
| Observation | using your senses to obtain information |
| Problem | It is what you start with. Usually asked as a question. It is why you are doing the experiment. |
| procedures | list of instructions about how to do the experiment |
| Qualitative Observations/Data | Physical descriptions or qualities about an object or experiment. |
| Quantitative Observations/Data | Data involving numbers. |
| Physical measurements such as mass, length, temperature, and volume. | Made with tools Ex: 32inches, 47lbs |
| Research | Looking up information or reading about your topic to try to find out more information. Usually before you make a hypothesis. |
| Scientific Method | Observation, Problem, Hypothesis, Experiment, Data Collection, Conclusion, and Retest (if needed) |
| Variables | Any factor that changes and affects the outcome of an experiment. |
