Geology vocab.

| Map key or legend | A list of all the symbols used on the map with an explanation of their meaning |
| Map scale | relates distances on a map to distances on the Earth's surface |
| Prime Meridian | runs from the North Pole to the South Pole, and passes through Greenwich England |
| International Dateline | divide the Earth into the east and west hemispheres |
| Lines of Latitude | run east to west (horizontal) and measure north and south of the equator which is 0* latitude |
| Lines of Longitude | run north to south and meet at the poles. they measure east to west of the prime meridian, which is 0* longitude |

| Elevation | the Hight of a location above a reference point |
| time zone | an area which observes a uniform standard time. Time zones tend to follow the boundaries between countries |
| topographic map | a two- dimensional representation of Earths surface that shows the elevation and geographic positions of natural and man-made features |
| relief | the variation in elevation across the lands surface |
| Contour interval | the vertical distance between two adjacent contour lines on a topographical map |
| contour line | a line on a map joining points of equal height above or below sea level |
| index contour | a bold or thicker line on a topographic map that indicates a specific elevation and is usually drawn every fifth contour line: |
| slope | a surface of which one end or side is at a higher level than another; a rising or falling surface. |
| geologic map | a specialized map that shows the distribution, composition, age, and structure of the Earth's crust |
| cross section | a surface or shape that is or would be exposed by making a straight cut through something, especially at right angles to an axis. |
| landform | a natural feature of earths surface |
| Plain | a large area of flat land with few trees |
| mountain | a large natural elevation of the earths surface rising abruptly from the surrounding level a large steep hill |
| plateau | an area of relatively high ground |
| landform region | a part of earth with a unique set of physical features |
| the equator | the equal dividing line between the north and south pole |
| map projection | allows us to represent the earths surface on a flat map |
| GPS | the global positioning system that is a space-based radio-navigation system |
