Unit 3 Matter,Phases
Unit 3 States of Matter, Phase Changes
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| As altitude increases, air pressure | decreases |
| atoms | basic particle from which all elements are made |
| condensation | Gas to liquid:(Dew on grass) |
| deposition | gas to solid (frost) |
| element | cannot be broken down into any other substance |
| evaporation | Liquid to Gas: (Puddles disappearing) |
| evaporation | the change of a liquid to a gas |
| freezing point | Liquid to solid:(Water to ice) |
| gas | The particles are very separated. The particles move quickly. |
| liquid | can be poured and take on the shape of their container. Has mass and volume. |
| liquid | The particles are close together and slide past each other. |
| matter | anything that takes up space and has mass |
| melting point | Solid to liquid:(Ice to water) |
| particles | Tiny atoms that make up all matter |
| plasma | occurs at EXTREMELY high temperatures; Found in stars lightning, and neon lights; often called the "fourth state of matter" |
| solid | The particles are tightly packed. The particles do not move around. |
| sublimation | the process in which a solid changes directly into a gas |
