Skeletal Muscle function Contract to produce movement, sustain body posture + position, maintain body temperature, store nutrients, stabilize joints
Skeletal Muscle location Throughout the body, attached to bones by tendons
Skeletal Muscle characteristic Voluntary, looks strippy, multi-nucleied
Cardiac Muscle function Pump blood throughout the body by rhythmically contracting and relaxing, generating the force needed to circulate blood through the cardiovascular system
Cardiac Muscle location Walls of the heart
Cardiac Muscle characteristic Looks branched, cells are attached to other cardiac muscle cells at intercalated disks, striated, 1 nucleus per cell
Smooth Muscle function Involuntarily contracting and relaxing to regulate the movement of substances within hollow organs like the stomach, intestines, bladder, blood vessels,+ airways
Smooth Muscle characteristics No visible striations, 1 nucleus per cell, spindle-shaped cells, looks like stratified squamous, but no connective tissue and more plumped.
Nervous Tissue function To send impulses to other area of the body, irritability, conductivity, composed of neurons and nerve support cells
Neuron Transmits signals, nerve impulses
Glial Neuroglia Nervous system supports cells - provide homeostatic support, protection, and defense to the nervous tissue
