Epithelial Tissue

TypeDescription
Simple Squamous Single layer of thin, flattened cells.
Simple Squamous function Diffusion + filtration
Simple Squamous location Air sacs of lungs + walls of capillaries
Simple Cuboidal Single layer, cube-shaped cells
Simple Cuboidal function Secretion + absorption
Simple Cuboidal location Lining of kidney tubules, ducts of glands, covering surface of ovaries
Simple Columnar Single layer, elongated cells with their nuclei in about the same position in each cell (usually near the basement membrane)
Simple Columnar function Protection, secretion, + absorption
Simple Columnar location In the lining of the digestive tract + uterus
Stratified Squamous Multi-layered, squamous cells, thicker tissue
Stratified Squamous function Protection
Stratified Squamous location Lining body cavities like the mouth + outer layer of skin
Stratified Cuboidal Multiple layers, cube-like shaped
Stratified Cuboidal function Protection
Stratified Cuboidal location Excretory ducts of sweat glands + salivary glands
Stratified Columnar Multiple layers, column shaped
Stratified Columnar function Protection
Stratified Columnar location Lining the eyelids, parts of male urethra, pharynx, + anus
Pseudostratified Columnar Appear "stratified" but really a single layer with nuclei at various levels giving the appearance of layered cells. Usually ciliated. Contains goblet cells.
Pseudostratified Columnar function Secretion + ciliated movement
Pseudostratified Columnar location Lining air passages like the trachea + tubes of the reproductive system
Transitional Epithelium Thick, layered cuboidal cells
Transitional Epithelium function "Stretchable" tissue, also forms barrier to block diffusion
Transitional Epithelium location Lining of urinary bladder
Apical Surface Free surface of the tissue
Basal Surface Connected to the connective tissue + anchored to the basement membrane
Basement Membrane The lower surface of the epithelium
Avascular No blood supply
