Literary Terms Study Guide

TermDefinition
Antihero Definition: A central character who lacks conventional heroic qualities. They blur the line between hero and villain.
Antagonist Definition: A character, group of characters, or institution that opposes the protagonist or main character.
Analogy Definition: A comparison between two things for the purpose of explanation or clarification.
Anagram Definition: A literary device wherein the writer jumbles up parts of a word(s) to create a new word.
Alliteration Definition: Repetition of an initial consonant sound.
Allegory Definition: A symbolic device in which characters or events in a story represent or symbolize ideas and concepts.

Metaphor Definition: A figure of speech that compares two unrelated things, typically by stating that one thing is another.
Simile Definition: A rhetorical device used to compare two things using the words "like," "as," or "than."
Oxymoron Definition: Two words or phrases used together that have, or seem to have, opposite meanings.
Onomatopoeia Definition: Words whose pronunciations imitate the sounds they describe.
Personification Definition: A type of figurative language that gives human characteristics to nonhuman things or inanimate objects.
Tone Definition: the AUTHOR’S attitude towards the audience, the subject, or the character
Mood Definition: the feeling the reader gets from a story.
