Matter Part 1

TermDefinition
Matter Anything that has mass and takes up space
Mixture Different types of matter mixed together. Can be separated into different parts
Solution A kind of mixture in which one or more types of matter are evenly mixed in another kind of matter. One substance dissolves in another.
Solid Has own shape and volume. Particles are tightly packed together
Liquid Takes the shape of the container but has its own volume. Particles are farther apart and can flow past one another
Gas NO shape or volume of its own. Particles are much farther apart and rarely come into contact with one another.
Volume The amount of space something takes up
Mass The amount of matter in something—everything is made of tiny particles.
Physical change Any change in the size, shape, or form of matter. No new matter is formed.
Chemical change Any change in matter that creates new matter. Ex) burning a candle, baking, spoiled milk
Physical property Property that can be observed using your senses. Ex) color, shape, size, texture, odor ***Also known as observable properties
Chemical property Properties that describe how matter changes into new matter. You are only able to observe them during a chemical change
Measurable properties Properties measured using a tool Ex) metric ruler, triple beam balance, graduated cylinder
