QuestionAnswer
Biomass renewable organic material that comes from plants and animals
Trophic Level a level or a position in a food chain, a food web, or an ecological pyramid
10 Percent Rule Only 10 percent of energy is transferred from one tropic level to another.
Primary Producer Animals that can produce their own energy, usually through photosynthesis
Primary Consumer An organism that eats plants, called herbivores
Secondary Consumer Organism that gains energy by eating a primary consumer
Tertiary Consumer Organism that gains energy by eating a secondary consumer. It's usually at the top of a food chain.
Decomposer An Organism that breaks down dead animal or plant material.
Kilocalorie Equals 1,000 calories and measures the energy content in food.
Joule Scientists use the joule to measure work. One joule is equal to the work done by a force of one newton to move an object one meter in the direction of the force
Autotroph Can make their own food and are a primary producer.
Heterotroph A consumer of food. They can't make their own food.
Photosynthesis A plant's ability to convert carbon dioxide and water into glucose and oxygen.
Adenosine Diphosphate (ADP) High-energy molecule that plays a role in the flow of energy to cells
Nitrogen Essential nutrient for sustaining life on Earth.
Hydrogen Essential element for sustaining life on Earth. It is found in water and nearly all living things.
Sulfur Chemical element that can build and fix DNA
Phosphorus A mineral that is important to cell membrane health, healthy bones and healthy teeth.
Anthopogenic Influence environmental changes caused by humans
Eutrophication when a body of water is so rich in nutrients that an overgrowth of algae and other plants occur
Biogeochemical Cycle the movement of chemical elements and compounds through the Earth's systems
Endothermic Reaction A chemical reaction that absorbs heat from the environment
Exothermic Reaction A chemical reaction that gives off heat to its environment
Food Chain A linear model that shows how food energy is passed from one organism to another
Food web All of the food chains in a single ecosystem
Energy Pyramid A diagram of how energy is passed from one level to another. It will have the most energy at the bottom.
Atmosphere The gases that surround the Earth
Biosphere The part of Earth that supports life
hydrosphere The total amount of water on the planet
geosphere The solid part of the Earth, including the crust, mantle and core

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
