Metamorphic Rock 4.3
Vocabulary
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| metamorphism | when pertaining to a rock, it is when a rocks changes its form. |
| solid-state alteration | process where a rock changes its mineral composition and texture without melting |
| foliated rock | rock that was created with force from opposite directions creating an appearance of minerals with flat layers, or bands, of crystals. |
| nonfoliated rock | rocks that are created with pressure and composed of blocky crystal shapes |
| porphyroblasts | Crystals in new metamorphic minerals that grow large while the surrounding minerals remain small. |
| low-grade metamorphism | associated with low temperatures and low pressure |
| high-grade metamorphism | associate with high temperatures and high pressure |
| intermediate-grade metamorphism | between low and high grade metamorphism |
| regional metamorphism | A process where temperature and pressure affect large regions of Earth's crust resulting in rocks type change, foliation, and the folding and deformation of rock layers in that area. |
| contact metamorphism | A process when molten material, such as that in an igneous intrusion, comes in contact with solid rock and changes it to metamorphic rock. |
| hydrothermal metamorphism | A process that occurs when hot water reacts with rock and alters its chemical and mineral composition creating metamorphic rock |
| metamorphic metallic mineral resources | resources that occurs mostly in the form of metal ores throughout metamorphic rock. examples are the iron ores magnetite and hematite |
| metamorphic non-metallic resources | resources that occur in metamorphic rocks but are not ore. examples are talc, asbestos, and graphite |
