| Term | Definition |

| Setting | the time, place, and environment in which a story takes place |
| Characters | a person, animal, or figure that is represented in a story |
| Theme | the central idea or message that an author conveys about a subject in a work of literature |
| Topic | the central subject matter in a work of literature; often one to three words |
| Plot | the sequence of events that make up a story; what happens, why it happens, and how each event affects the next one |
| Narrative Poem | a form of poetry that is used to tell a story |
| Conflict | a literary device that describes a struggle between opposing forces |
| Prediction | using information from a text to anticipate what will happen next |
| Climax | the most intense moment in a story; usually the turning point |
| Resolution | the conclusion of the story where the conflict is resolved |
