Sentence Types

TermDefinition
Dependent Clause Cannot stand on its own as a complete sentence because it doesn't express a complete thought
Independent Clause A clause that can stand on its own and is a complete thought
Simple Sentence Consists of a single, independent clause that includes a subject and a verb
Compound Sentence Joins 2 independent clauses together with the help of a comma and a coordinating conjunction or just a semicolon
Complex Sentence A single independent clause with a dependent clause
Compound-Complex Sentence Combines 2 or more independent clauses with at least 1 dependent clause
