| contraindication | situation in which a treatment or an action is inappropriate. |
| full weight-bearing (FWB) | able to stand of both legs. |
| gait belt | assistive and safety device used to ambulate |
| manual patient handling | moving patient by hand or bodily force |
| mechanical lift | manually operated hydraulic lift, electrically or battery operated lift, or ceiling-mounted lift. |
| nonweight-bearing (NWB) | unable to stand or walk on one or both legs |
| paralysis | inability to move of any extremity. |
| paresis | weakness of an extremity |
| parial weight-bearing (PWB) | unable to bear full weight on one or both legs |
| pivot | to twist or turn the entire body as one unit |
| sitting (lateral) transfer | patient sits throughout the transfer, such as when a sliding board is used |
| sliding board | a plastic or wooden board about two feet long that has a slippery surface |
| standing transfer | patient stands during the transfer with the help of one or two nursing assistants. |
