Grade 5 Sci Ch 2
Lesson 1 and 2
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| force | a push or pull that acts on an object |
| contact force | a force that requires two pieces of matter to touch |
| friction | the force that results when two materials rub against each other |
| non-contact force | a force that acts at a distance |
| gravity | the force of attraction between any two objects |
| acceleration | the rate at which the speed or direction of motion of an object changes over time |
| inertia | the tendency of an object to resist any change in motion |
| newton | a unit of force |
| air resistance | friction when air particles contact a surface |
| gravity, electric forces, and magnetic forces | types of non-contact force |
| weight | the force of Earth's pull on an object |
| repel each other | objects with the same magnetic charge |
| attract each other | objects with the opposite magnetic charge |
| uniform motion | motion without acceleration |
| Newton's First Law | an object will stay in uniform motion unless a net force acts on the object |
| Newton's Second Law part 1 | the greater the mass of an object, the smaller its change in motion |
| Newton's Second Law part 2 | the greater the force applied, the greater the change in motion for a given mass |
| Newton's Third Law | when one object exerts a force on a second object, the second force exerts a force on the first |
