| alloy | a substance made up of two or more metals. the combination helps achieve a desired result. |
| cast iron | a relatively brittle alloy of iron and carbon that can easily be cast into a mold. |
| corrosion | the chemical process of oxidizing a refined metal that can cause damage to structures. |
| flange | the projecting flat lip or rim that serves to increase the strength of a member. |
| hardwood | any wood that is created from deciduous trees. is typically used for framing and detailing due to cost. |
| lumber | wood that has been processed to uniform specific sizes for use in construction. |
| plain-sawn | the descriptor of lumber that is sawn so that the year rings are at a degree of less than 45 at the faces. |
| quartersawn | the descriptor of lumber that is sawn so that the year rings are at a degree of more than 45 at the faces. |
| softwood | any wood that is created from coniferous trees. is typically used for structure and stability due to workability. |
| steel | a strong alloy of iron with carbon and typically other elements used as a structural material. |
| timber | wood prepared for use in building and carpentry. |
| web | the structural member that connects the top and bottom chords in a truss in a triangular fashion. |
| wood | its wood. |
| wrought iron | a tough and malleable form of iron better suited to forging or rolling than casting. |
| beam | a sturdy piece of squrde timber or metal spanning an opening to support the roof or flooring system above. |
| bridging | braces and arrangements used to keep joists stabilized and distribute loads. |
| bracing | a structural system that provides stability and strength to a building against lateral loads, such as wind loads. |
| column | a vertical structural element that transfers weight from the higher levels of a building to its foundation. |
| decking | the boards that make up the structure of the deck cover, laid atop a timber substructure. |
| framing | the assembled materials that create a structures shape and support. |
| header | a member composed of two or more wood members secured and used to transfer openings such as windows or doorways. |
| joist | a horizontal structural member that strenghens the floors and ceilings of a building by connecting to the studs in the walls. |
| rafter | a sloping beam that extends from the peak of a roof to the wall plate to support roof weight and shape. |
| seasoning | he process of drying timber to remove the moisture contained in walls of the wood cells |
| sheathing | a protective layer of board or panel material that covers the framework of a building and provides structural integrity |
| stringer | a cut structural member that supports both treads and risers of a staircase. |
| stud | a vertical framing component of a wall or partition. |
| subfloor | a structural layer of material that sits on top of joists and provides support for the finished floor. |
