Vocabulary associated with our Ecosystems unit

| open system | any type of ecosystem because energy and matter are transferred in and out of the system |
| habitat | where a population lives |
| population | any group of living organisms of the same kind living in the same place at the same time |
| community | where all populations interact |
| competition | an interaction between organisms or species over resources |
| predation | the capturing of prey as a means of survival |
| cooperation | working together |
| symbiosis | two organisms living together to the betterment of each |
| niche | the role or function of a particular species in its community or ecosystem |
| producers | organisms that make their own food |
| decomposers | organisms that gain energy by breaking down the dead or decaying organisms |
| consumers | organisms that eat other organisms for food |
| energy cycle | a cycle that determines which populations survive or die |
| food chain | how energy is passed, in the form of food, from one organism to another. Made up of producers, consumers, and decomposers. |
| food web | a group of interrelated food chains that are dependent upon each other |
| biomes | where several habitats intersect |
| conservation | the care and management of natural resources |
| endangered | the danger caused when the available habitat can no longer support the members of a population |
| extinct | all of the members of a population die |
| prey | an animal hunted for food by another animal |
| predator | an animal that hunts other animals for food |
| ecosystem | any group of living and nonliving things that interact |
| organic | coming from decomposed living matter |
| habitat reduction by humans | the numbers of organisms decrease as humans occupy their living space |
| pollutants | waste materials that contaminate the air, water, or soil |
| increased nutrients | fertilizers or supplements |
