producers organisms that make their own food
decomposers organisms that gain energy by breaking down the dead or decaying organisms
consumers organisms that eat other organisms for food
energy cycle a cycle that determines which populations survive or die
food chain how energy is passed, in the form of food, from one organism to another. Made up of producers, consumers, and decomposers.
food web a group of interrelated food chains that are dependent upon each other
biomes where several habitats intersect
conservation the care and management of natural resources
endangered the danger caused when the available habitat can no longer support the members of a population
extinct all of the members of a population die
prey an animal hunted for food by another animal
predator an animal that hunts other animals for food
ecosystem any group of living and nonliving things that interact
organic coming from decomposed living matter
habitat reduction by humans the numbers of organisms decrease as humans occupy their living space
pollutants waste materials that contaminate the air, water, or soil
increased nutrients fertilizers or supplements
