Vocabulary related to our Landforms unit

| weathering | breaking rock into smaller fragments |
| ice wedging | freezing of water inside cracks in rocks that expands and splits the rocks |
| erosion | transformation of the land by moving water and wind |
| glaciers | large sheets of ice moving slowly over the land that grind rocks and transport material |
| landforms | mountains, valleys, plains, and deserts |
| evaporation | changing of water from a liquid to a gas |
| groundwater | water that soaks into the ground without flowing |
| water cycle | movement of water from the oceans into the atmosphere, falling upon the land, and flowing back to the ocean |
| condensation | changing of water vapor back into liquid water |
| precipitation | condensation of water vapor that falls from the sky as rain, snow, sleet, or hail |
| transpiration | release of water vapor (gas) into the air from plants |
| tributaries | small streams that feed into larger streams |
| canyons | deep narrow valleys with steep sides |
| valleys | naturally formed between hills made by water and/or ice erosion |
| plains | wide stretches of land without significant changes of elevation |
| plateaus | fairly level highlands surrounded by steep slopes |
| eroded | ground up or worn away |
| sediment | eroded material carried in water |
| deposition | process of sediment settling out of the water |
| flood plains | land beside the rivers formed by sediments |
| levee | low hill of sediment following a river course |
| alluvial deposits | sediments laid down by water |
| deltas | alluvial deposits where a river meets the ocean |
| ores | the deposits of valuable minerals such as gold |
| colluvial | mixtures of eroded materials near the base of mountains |
| eolian | materials deposited by the wind |
| silt | a very fine sediment |
| loess | thick build up of very fine material deposited by the wind |
| drumlins | whale-shaped hills formed by ancient glacial deposits |
| eskers | long winding ridges formed by ancient glacial deposits |
| kettles | small depressions gouged out by ancient glaciers |
| meanders | back and forth pathways of a slow moving river |
| delta | alluvial deposit where a river meets the ocean |
