Space

TermDefinition
Milky Way Galaxy The galaxy that our solar system is in.
Star A giant ball of hot, glowing gases.
Solar System The planets, asteroids and comets that orbit the sun as well as the planets' moons.
Inner Planets The four rocky planets closest to the sun.
Outer Planets The four large planets farthest from the sun that are made of ice and gases.
Orbit The circular movement of an object, such as a planet or moon,
Moon a large, round piece of rock that revolves around a planet.
Asteroid Chunks of rock in space.
Comet Chunks of rock and ice that orbit the sun.
Axis An imaginary line that an object spins around.
Rotation The motion that makes Earth spin one time every 24 hours.
Revolution The movement of one object around another.
Ellipse An oval shape that is used to describe the rotation of objects in space.
Constellation Imaginary pictures formed by stars that are used to help identify stars.
Eclipse The shadow cast by an object, such as the moon, when it moves between Earth and the sun.
Light-year A unit to measure distance that is based on how far light travels in a year.
Telescope A tool used to make objects in the distance appear larger and closer so they can be observed.
Sun The star around which the earth orbits.
Gravity A force that pulls masses toward large objects, such as Earth and the sun.
