| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Atom | smallest component of an element having the chemical properties of the element, consisting of neutrons |
| Nucleus | The positively charged mass within an atom., composed of neutrons and protons |
| Proton | a positively charged subatomic particle that is found in the nucleus of an atom |
| Neutron | A neutral (no charge) subatomic particle that is found in the nucleus of an atom |
| electron | A negatively charged subatomic particle that is found outside the nucleus |
| electron cloud | Area around the nucleus where an electron is liking to be found |
| atomic symbol | a one or two-letter abbreviation for a chemical name |
| atomic number | the number of protons in the nucleus of an atom determines chemical properties of an element |
| atomic mass/mass number | the total number of protons and neutrons in the nucleus of an atom |
| average atomic mass | weighted average of the mass of all the isotopes of a given element |
| Periodic table | arrangement of known elements into rows and columns based on physical and chemical properties |
| Periodic group (family) | vertical columns of elements on the periodic table, that have the same number of valence electrons |
| Periodic period | Horizontal rows of elements on the periodic table, that have the same number of occupied electron shells |
| isotope | versions of the same element that differ in the amount of neutrons in the nucleus |
| ions | charged atom; Version of an element with unequal protons and electrons |
| Cation | positively charged atom; has more protons than electrons |
| anion | negatively charged atom; has more electrons than protons |
