Topic 2 vocabulary and other important terms
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Electric Circuit | a complete, unbroken path that electric charges can flow through |
| Voltage | the difference in electric potential energy per charge between 2 points in a circuit |
| Resistance | a measure of how difficult it is for current to flow |
| Diameter | distance across a circle through the midpoint |
| Ohm's Law | resistance in a circuit is equal to voltage divided by current |
| Series Circuit | all parts of a circuit are connected one after another along one path |
| Parallel Circuit | different parts of a circuit are on separate branches meaning there are several paths for current to travel |
| Wave | any disturbance that transfers energy from one place to another |
| Mechanical Wave | waves that result from a vibration of a medium |
| Transverse Wave | motion of the wave is perpendicular to the motion of the medium through which the wave travels |
| Longitudinal Wave | a wave that travels in the same direction as the vibration that produced the wave |
| Cyclical | a repeating series of events |
| Amplitude | measures the distance from the resting point of the wave and the crest |
| Wavelength | measures the distance between 2 identical parts of the wave |
| Frequency | measures the number of times a waves repeats over a period of time |
| Electronic Signal | information that is sent as a pattern in a controlled flow of current through a circuit |
| Wave Pulse | a pulse of energy that travels through a circuit |
| Electromagnetic Signal | information that is sent as patterns of electromagnetic waves |
| Analog Signal | allows for a continuous record of some kind of signal |
| Digital Signal | allows for a record of numerical values of an action at a set continuous time intervals |
| Binary Signals | consists of ones and zeros |
| Transmission | moving |
| Pixels | small uniform shapes that are combined to make a larger image |
| Information Technology | consists of computer and telecommunications |
| Software | refers to programs that encode, decode, and interpret information |
| Noise | random signals from the environment |
| Bandwidth | information that can be transmitted and measured in bits per second |
