Cell organelles

TermDefinition
Nucleus Directs the cells activities and contains DNA
Cytoplasm Jelly-like substance that holds organelles in place
Cell Membrane A protective barrier that encloses the cell; allows small particles to move into and out of the cell
Cell Wall Rigid structure that gives support to the plant cell. The outermost structure
Mitochondria The powerhouse of the cell; breaks down food to make ATP energy
Vacuole An organelle that stores food, water, and waste
Chloroplast Uses sunlight to produce food through photosynthesis
Cell The basic building block of all living things
Organ A group of tissues that work together
Tissue A group of similar cells that work together
Organ System A group of different organs that work together
Organism A group of different organ systems that work together
Eukaryote Make up multicellular organisms; contain a nucleus and specialized organelles
Prokaryote Make up unicellular organisms; lack a nucleus or specialized organelles
