| Contraindication | Situations in which something is not indicated, inappropriate, or potentially dangerous. |
| Full weight- bearing (FWB) | The ability to stand / put pressure on both legs |
| gait belt | used to assist with ambulation |
| Manual patient handling | moving a patient by hand or bodily force |
| Mechanical lift | manually operated hydraulic lift, an electrically operated lift or a ceiling-mounted lift. Used to transfer dependent or heavy patients from one surface to another. |
| non-weight-bearing (NWB) | No pressure on both legs, ect. |
| paralysis | inability to move of any extremity |
| paresis | weakness of an extremity |
| partial weight-bearing (PWB) | may bare some weight. |
| pivot | when the patient is standing, turn the entire body as one unit to transfer |
| sitting (lateral) transfer | patient sits throughout the transfer |
| sliding board | a plastic or wooden board about two feet long that has a slippery surface. It is used for sitting (lateral) transfer. |
| standing transfer | the patient stands during the transfer with the help of one or two nursing assistants. |
