| Term | Definition |

| Contraindication | A situation in which a treatment or an action is inappropriate. |
| Full weight - bearing (FWB) | Able to stand on both legs |
| Gait belt | The belt placed around the patients waist to assist in ambulation. |
| Manual patient handling | A moving patient by hand or bodily force, including pushing, pulling, carrying, holding or supporting the patient or a body part. |
| Mechanical lift | Manually operated hydraulic lift, electrically operated lift, or ceiling - mounted life. Used to transfer dependent or heavy patients from once surface to another. |
| Nonweight - bearing | Unable to stand or walk on one or both legs. |
| Paralysis | Loss or impairment of the ability to move parts of the body. |
| Paresis | Weakness of an extremities. |
| Partial weight - bearing (PWB) | Can bear some weight. |
| Pivot | To twist or turn in a swiveling motion. |
| Sitting (lateral) transfer | A moving patient from one surface to another with patient sitting. |
| Sliding bored | A plastic or wooden bored that is about two feet long with a slippery surface. Used for sitting lateral transfer. |
| Standing transfer | Patient is moved from once surface to another while standing. |
| Weight - bearing (WB) | Having the ability to stand on one or both legs. |
