WEEK 6 STUDY STACK

QuestionAnswer
First off, what is pH? What does the pH of a solution measure? The pH of a solution measures the concentration of hydrogen ions in the solution.
Cells of the epidermis derive from stem cells of the stratum basale. Describe how the cells change as they become integrated into the different layers of the epidermis. What are the different layers of the skin and how do they differ from one another? Epidermis, Dermis, Hypodermis (Subcutaneous Layer) epidermal cells move from the stratum basale to the stratum corneum, they undergo a process of differentiation and keratinization, ultimately forming a protective barrier.
describe metabolic alkalosis? Metabolic alkalosis can be caused by too much bicarbonate, or by losing too much acid in the body. Metabolic alkalosis can occur if the kidneys are releasing too much acid into the urine, excessive vomiting, or from dehydration.
Stratum Basale (Basal Layer) Characteristics: The stratum basale is a single layer of columnar or cuboidal basal cells. These cells are mitotically active, meaning they continuously divide to produce new keratinocytes.
Stratum Spinosum (Prickly Layer) Cells in this layer appear spiny due to the presence of desmosomes, which are structures that provide strength and support by connecting cells.
Stratum Granulosum (Granular Layer) This layer is characterized by the presence of keratohyalin granules, which contribute to the formation of keratin in the upper layers.
Stratum Lucidum (Clear Layer) The stratum lucidum consists of a few rows of flat, dead keratinocytes.
Stratum Corneum (Horny Layer): Provides a durable overcoat for the body, protecting deeper cells from the environment, water loss, and abrasion.
how does the anatomy of the skeletal system relate with other systems within our body? The skeletal and muscular systems work in harmony to allow movement with both systems depending on each other.
What are some signs and symptoms of Alkalosis? Alkalosis is caused by a decrease of carbon dioxide level or increased bicarbonate level, making the body too alkaline. confusion, hand tremors, nausea, vomiting, lightheadedness, muscle spasms/twitching, or numbness/tingling of the face, hands, or feet.
