Climate and Climatic Regions
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| climate | the average weather conditions in an area over a long period of time |
| temperature | the measurement of the average kinetic energy of the molecules in an object or system |
| ocean current | the continuous, predictable, directional movement of seawater driven by gravity, wind (Coriolis Effect), and water density |
| latitude | also called parallels, individual lines that divide the Earth and run east to west |
| altitude | how high something is compared to its height above sea level |
| prevailing winds | air currents that blow mainly in one direction |
| seasonal winds | movements of air repetitively and predictably driven by changes in large-scale weather patterns |
| temperate climate | occurs in the middle latitudes which span between the tropics and the polar regions of Earth |
| continental climate | relatively dry climate with very hot summers and very cold winters, characteristic of the central parts of Asia and North America |
| polar climate | consists of cool summers and very cold winters, which results in treeless tundra, glaciers, or a permanent or semi-permanent layer of ice |
| tropical climate | the equatorial or tropical zone and characterized by high temperatures throughout the year |
| dry climate | low and unpredictable precipitation |
| El Nino | climate pattern that describes the unusual warming of surface waters in the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean |
