Biosphere the sum of all living matter on Earth
Lithosphere the solid layer of the Earth’s crust, including rocks, sand, and soil
Hydrosphere the sum of all water at or near the Earth’s surface

Water Cycle also known as the hydrologic cycle, the movement of water throughout the different spheres of the planet
Nonrenewable Resources fossil fuels formed by the decomposition plants, protist, and animal remains over a time span of several million years
Pollution any environmental change that adversely affects the lives and health of living things
Global Warming an increase in average temperatures on Earth
Greenhouse Effect natural situation in which heat is retained in Earth’s atmosphere by carbon dioxide, methane, water vapor, and other gases
Ozone Layer a band of ozone gas made up of three oxygen atoms, it protects the earth from receiving too much ultraviolet radiation
Desertification in areas with dry climates, a process caused by a combination of poor farming practices, overgrazing, and drought that turns productive land into desert
Deforestation massive clearing of entire temperate and tropical forests
