Kingdom largest taxonomic group after domain, consists of closely-related phylums, there are currently five: Monera, Protista, Fungi, Plantae, and Animalia
Kingdom Animalia consists of complex multi-cellular heterotrophs, lack a cell wall, cells are highly specialized, able to move in complex ways
Kingdom Plantae consists of multi-cellular photosynthetic organisms, most live on land, all cells have a cell wall containing cellulose, cells contain plastids that stores food
Kingdom Fungi consists of multi-cellular, eukaryotic heterotrophs, cell walls are made of chitin instead of cellulose, cells lack chlorophyll and cannot carry-out photosynthesis
Kingdom Monera consists of the most numerous and widespread organisms on earth, prokaryotes lacking membrane-bound organelles and nucleus, includes bacteria which were the earliest live forms
Autotroph an organism that can create its own food by capturing energy from sunlight or chemicals and use it to produce its own food, also called a producer
Heterotroph an organism that obtains energy from the foods it consumes, also called a consumer
