| homeostasis | a relatively constant state maintained by the body for optimal health, the set point can vary due to internal or external factors |
| Cell membranes | Cell membranes are made of a gelatinous phospholipid bilayer, this bilayer is made up of two layers each with a polar end and non polar ends oriented towards each other in the middle. The polar outside of the bilayer is water proof. |
| Connective tissue | A varied and ubiquitous form of tissue. It connects, supports, transports, and protects. |
| Muscle tissue | Responsible for converting chemical energy to mechanical movement. Comes in three varieties: smooth, skeletal, and cardiac. |
| Nervous tissue | A type of tissue characterized by its connectivity. This tissue is responsible for sending and receiving signals all over the body. |
| Edpidermis | The upper, superficial layer of the skin. This is made up of five distinct layers of skin: stratum basale, spinosum, granulosum, lucidum, and corneum. |
| Dermis | The middle layer of the skin containing the muscles, nerves, connective tissue, and blood vessels which make up the primary layer of the skin. |
| Hypodermis | The fatty layer under the skin contains some connective tissue that connects the skin to the body. |
