| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| carbohydrate | Made of monosaccharides and provide quick energy; sugars and starches |
| monosaccharide | Simple sugars that are the building blocks (monomers) of carbohydrates |
| protein | Made of amino acids; provide structure for hair and nails and regulate chemical reactions |
| amino acid | Building blocks (monomers) of proteins |
| lipid | Made of fatty acids and provide long-term energy storage; fats, oils, and waxes |
| fatty acid | Building blocks (monomers) of lipids |
| nucleic acid | Made of nucleotides and provide genetic instructions; DNA and RNA |
| nucleotide | Made up of a sugar, phosphate, and nitrogen base; the building block (monomer) of nucleic acids |
| activation energy | The amount of energy needed for a chemical reaction to start |
| active site | The place on the enzyme where the substrate binds |
| denature | When the shape of the enzyme is destroyed because of incorrect temperature or pH |
| enzyme | Protein that speeds up chemical reactions (protein catalyst) |
| product | The chemicals that are made after a reaction occurs |
| reactant | The chemicals that are found at the beginning of a reaction |
| substrate | The chemicals that will bind to the enzyme |
