carbohydrate Made of monosaccharides and provide quick energy; sugars and starches
monosaccharide Simple sugars that are the building blocks (monomers) of carbohydrates
protein Made of amino acids; provide structure for hair and nails and regulate chemical reactions
amino acid Building blocks (monomers) of proteins
lipid Made of fatty acids and provide long-term energy storage; fats, oils, and waxes
fatty acid Building blocks (monomers) of lipids
nucleic acid Made of nucleotides and provide genetic instructions; DNA and RNA
nucleotide Made up of a sugar, phosphate, and nitrogen base; the building block (monomer) of nucleic acids
activation energy The amount of energy needed for a chemical reaction to start
active site The place on the enzyme where the substrate binds
denature When the shape of the enzyme is destroyed because of incorrect temperature or pH
enzyme Protein that speeds up chemical reactions (protein catalyst)
product The chemicals that are made after a reaction occurs
reactant The chemicals that are found at the beginning of a reaction
substrate The chemicals that will bind to the enzyme
