Weather
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Precipitation | Any liquid or solid forms of water that falls to the ground from the sky |
| Transpiration | Passage of water vapor from a plant to the atmosphere |
| Evaporation | The process of where water goes from a liquid to a gas (water vapor) when these molecules gain thermal energy |
| Condensation | Water goes from a gas (water vapor) to a liquid when it loses thermal energy and has something to stick to. |
| Crystallization | Water vapor moving straight to the solid state (ice) when thermal energy is lost at a rapid pace |
| Density | The relationship between the amount of matter (mass) in the sample and the amount of space it takes up (volume) |
| Run-off | Rainfall that is not absorbed by the soil and travels to lower elevations to the ocean |
| Temperature | Measure of the average kinetic energy of the particles in a substance |
| Air Pressure | Force exerted by the weight of the air above |
| High Pressure | Sinking dense air that causes clear skies and nice weather |
| Low Pressure | Rising air which causes cloudy, stormy weather and can cause colder temperatures |
| Particle | Tiny piece of matter |
| Atmosphere | The layers of gases surrounding the planet |
| Humidity | The measurement of the percentage of water vapor in the air |
| Wind speed | Rate at which air is moving horizontally |
| Wind direction | Direction the wind is coming from |
| Air Mass | Large section of air with similar humidity and temperature |
| Latitude | The distance north or south of the equator |
| Altitude | The distance above sea level |
| Barometer | Tool used to measure air pressure |
| Anemometer | Tool used to measure wind speed and direction |
| Dew point | The temperature when air reaches 100% humidity and water condenses (goes from water vapor to liquid) |
| Stationary Front | Boundary between two air masses, neither of which is strong enough to replace the other (no movement) |
| Occluded Front | Boundary between a cold front and warm front |
| Cold Front | Boundary of an advancing mass of cold air dry air (replaces warm air) |
| Warm Front | Boundary of an advancing mass of warm humid air (replacing cold air) |
| Climate | Typical atmospheric conditions in a place, averaged over a long period of time |
| Weather | The day to day, hour to hour, atmospheric conditions |
| Cloud | Visible mass of water droplets or ice crystals in the atmosphere |
| Water Cycle | Continuous movement of water on, above, and below the surface of the Earth |
| Air Mass Circulation | Large-scale movement of air masses around the Earth |
| Longitude | The distance east or west of the prime meridian |
| Rain Shadow | Area on the leeward side of a mountain range with less rainfall |
