Lab Equipment

Learn the proper names and uses of common tools used in the science lab.

TermDefinition
Goggles Protects eyes.
Apron Protects body and clothing.
Tongs Used to pick up hot or contaminated objects.
Thermometer Measures changes in temperature in degrees Celsius/Fahrenheit
Pipette Used to add a measured amount of liquid, one drop at a time.
Hot Plate An electric device used to heat glassware and its contents.
Bunsen Burner A gas device used to heat samples to high temperatures with a single flame.
Triple Beam Balance Used to find the mass of object, very precisely, in grams.
Erlenmeyer Flask Used to mix, heat and cool liquids. Doesn't spill easily.
Meter Stick Used to measure length of larger objects in meters, centimeters, and millimeters.
Ruler Used to measure the length of smaller objects in centimeters, and millimeters.
Test Tube Used to hold, heat, and mix small amounts of liquids.
Rubber Stopper Keeps contents in test tube from spilling.
Beaker A simple container for stirring, mixing, and heating liquids.
Mortar and Pestle Used to prepare ingredients or substances by crushing and grinding them into fine powder or paste.
Graduated Cylinder Used for accurately measuring volumes of liquid.
Microscope Allows us to see objects that are too small for the naked eye.
Microscope Slide Used to place a small sample on to view using a microscope.
Petri Dish Used to grow cultures (bacteria, mold), or holding living things for observation.
Ring Stand and Clamp Holds glassware - can be used to hold a beaker or test tube over a Bunsen burner.
Funnel Used to easily pour liquids into containers with small openings.
Tweezers Used to pick up small objects.
Pitcher Holds larger amounts of liquids.
Hand Lens Used to make objects appear larger.
Convection Tubes Clear glass or plastic tubes used to observe convection currents.
Test Tube Rack Used to hold test tubes.
