| weathering | the process of rocks and other materials breaking down or dissolving |
| erosion | the process by which rock and other materials are moved from one place to another |
| deposition | the process in which sediment settles |
| physical weathering | the process in which rocks are broken down into smaller pieces, but still remain the same type of rock |
| chemical weathering | the process in which which rocks are broken down, but go through a chemical change |
| riverbed | the channel in which a river flows |
| mouth | the end of the river; the place where a river empties into a sea, gulf or ocean |
| source | where a river begins, usually in the mountains or an underground spring |
| tributary | a river, stream or bayou flowing into a larger river or lake |
| delta | a fan-shaped land formation found at the mouth of a river |
| estuary | where a river meets the sea; where freshwater meets saltwater |
| levee | ridges of sediment deposited on each side of a river |
| marsh | low, usually flooded land along a coastline |
| floodplain | land next to a river that is prone to flooding |
| glacier | a slow-moving mass of ice |
