TermDefinition
biosphere the parts of Earth and the surrounding atmosphere where there is life.
population all the organisms of the same species that live in the same area at the same time.
species a group of organisms that have similar traits and are able to produce fertile offspring.
community all the populations living in an ecosystem at the same time.
limiting factor a factor that can limit the growth of a population.
biotic potential the potential growth of a population if it could grow in perfect conditions with no limiting factors.
carrying capacity the largest number of individuals of one species that an ecosystem can support over time.
overpopulation condition that occurs when a population becomes so large that it causes damage to the environment.
symbiosis a close, long-term relationship between two species that usually involves an exchange of food or energy.
commensalism a symbiotic relationship that benefits one species but does not harm or benefit the other.
parasitism a symbiotic relationship in which one organism benefits and the other is harmed.
mutualism a symbiotic relationship in which both organisms benefit.
ecological succession the process of one ecological community gradually changing into another.
climax community a stable community that no longer goes through major ecological changes.
eutrophication the process of a body of water becoming nutrient-rich.
dynamic equilibrium describes the balance between different parts of the ecosystem.
