| anticipatory grief | mourning when the dying person or their family is expecting the death |
| autopsy | examination of a body by a pathologist to determine cause of death |
| cremation | process of burning a dead body until it becomes ash |
| death | end of life; cessation of all body functions |
| grief | deeply emotional process that is a response to loss |
| grief counseling | therapy that helps a person cope after someone has died |
| hospice care | care for ppl who have 6 months or less to live |
| palliative care | care that focuses on pain relief, controlling symptoms, preventing side effects/complications, and maintaining quality of life for a person who is dying/very ill |
| postmortem care | care of the body after death |
| denial | first stage of grief; refusing to believe they are dying |
| anger | second stage of grief; asking "Why me?" and directing upset behavior towards staff, visitors, roommates, etc. |
| bargaining | third stage of grief; promises w/ God, "Yes me, but..." |
| depression | fourth stage of grief; deeply sad/withdrawn |
| acceptance | fifth and final stage of grief; at peace w/ situation |
