Heart

TermDefinition
pericardium - protects and anchors heart - prevents overfilling - serous fluid reduces surface tension and lubricates
epicardium visceral layer of pericardium
myocardium cardiac muscle layer forming the bulk of the heart
endocardium - innermost surface - endothelial layer of the inner myocardial surface - simple squamous epithelium
auricles - located on each atrium - increase atrial volume
pulmonary veins carry oxygenated blood from the lungs to the left side of the heart (RED)
pulmonary arteries carry deoxygenated blood from the right side of the heart to the lungs (BLUE)
atria receiving chambers of the heart
pathway of blood returning to the heart - enters right atria from superior and inferior vena cavae and coronary sinus (DEOXYGENATED) - enters left atria from the lungs via the pulmonary arteries (OXYGENATED)
ventricles discharging chambers of the heart
right ventricle pumps blood into the pulmonary trunk --> lungs
left ventricle pumps blood into aorta --> brachiocephalic, left common carotid, left subclavian arteries --> tissues of the body
atrioventricular valves prevent backflow into the atria when ventricles contract - tricuspid valve (right AV valve) - mitral/bicuspid valve (left AV valve) - papillary muscles anchor chordae tendinae - chordae tendinae connect papillary muscles to valves
semilunar valves prevent backflow into ventricles after ventricles contract - aortic SL valve: btwn left ventricle and aorta- system circulation - pulmonary SL valve: btwn right ventricle and pulmonary trunk --> lungs
pathway of blood through heart and lungs right atrium - tricuspid valve - right ventricle - pulmonary SL valve - pulmonary arteries - lungs - pulmonary veins - left atrium - bicuspid valve - left ventricle - aortic SL valve - aorta - systemic circulation
foramen ovale allows oxygenated blood in the right atrium to reach left atrium
ductus arteriosus connects aorta with pulmonary artery
ductus venosus shunts oxygenated blood from placenta away from semifunctional liver towards the heart
ligamentum arteriosus fibrous remnant of fetal ductus arteriosus
fossa ovalis remnant that covers the opening once the baby is born (was the foramen ovale)
coronary arteries - marginal artery (RIGHT) - circumflex artery - anterior and posterior interventricular
coronary veins - great cardiac vein - middle cardiac vein - small cardiac vein - coronary sinus

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
