Blood
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| neutrophils | - 3-5 lobed nucleus - phagocytize bacteria |
| lymphocytes | - classic nucleus (oval/round shape) - specific immunity: B cells (make antibodies), T cells, natural killer cells (elevated in viral infections) |
| monocytes | - ovoid, horseshoe, kidney shaped nucleus - phagocytize pathogens and debris - elevated in all kinds of infections |
| eosinophils | - 2-4 lobed nucleus - kill parasites - elevated in allergies |
| basophils | - U shaped nucleus (2 lobes) - secrete histamine and heparin (for inflammation) |
| sickle cell anemia | abnormal hemoglobin within RBC causing sickled shape - unable to carry oxygen - sickled cells cannot pass through small capillaries = pain and ischemia |
| pernicious anemia | vitamin B12 deficiency - reduced production of Intrinsic factor which decreases vitamin B12 absorption - causes large RBCs that don't hold oxygen well |
| iron deficient anemia | inefficient RBC production = insufficient hemoglobin = decrease in O2 carrying capacity |
| eosinophilia | excessive eosinophil production due to parasitic infection or allergies |
| lymphocytic leukemia | DNA of B cell is damaged so it can't fight infection - crowds out healthy blood cells that normally fight infection |
