Chapter 2

TermDefinition
International System of Units A version of the metric system used by modern scientists.
Volume The amount of space an object or substance takes up. The basic unit of measurement for liquid is the liter and solid is the cubic meter.
Mass The measure of the amount of matter in an object. This measurement is constant, even on the moon. The basic unit of measurement is the kilogram.
Metric System A measurement system based on the number 10. Includes meters, liters and grams. Does NOT include inches, pounds or yards.
Weight A measure of the force of gravity acting against an object. This measurement is not constant and can change when gravity changes, like on the moon.
Density A measure of how much mass is contained in a given volume. This stays the same no matter the sample size.
